My Furnace Works, So Why Is My House So Cold?

When your house doesn’t feel anywhere close to what the thermostat is reading or the temperature’s dropping fast but you still can hear your furnace humming away, you may start to wonder what’s going on.

Your furnace may seem like it’s working but if it feels like the temperature is steadily dropping, it’s likely that there’s something wrong.

What to do when it feels like temperature is dropping in your home?

If you can hear your furnace working but it feels really cold, you may find that your furnace is actually blowing cold air into your home. If this is the case, there are a few things you can do to help.

  • Check your air filter. If your air filters are dirty it can not only impede the flow of air into your home but it may actually cause your furnace to overheat. When your furnace starts to overheat, cold air will blow into your home. Change out the filter and see if it helps.
  • Head to the thermostat. If your furnace is constantly on yet your house is still cold, it may be that you are blowing both cold and hot air into the house. If the fan switch on your thermostat is set to on instead of auto, this can cause your furnace to keep blowing even when it’s not on the heating cycle. This can affect the temperature in your home negatively.
  • Get your ductwork checked. If your furnace is blowing hot but your home is still cold, it may be a problem with your ductwork. You may have leaky or damaged ducts that are letting hot air escape and cold air in. Sometimes a damper in the system can get miss-adjusted or come loose, thereby inadvertently blocking or reducing airflow.  If you have a zoning system, it may have failed, partially or completely, again affecting airflow and creating a loss of comfort.
  • Call for maintenance. Sometimes your system just needs a good tune-up to get it working again. Blowing out the cobwebs and making sure all your parts are in good condition can help your system run more effectively.

If the feels like temperature in your home is cold and your furnace is blowing, it may be time to call the experts at P.K. Wadsworth.
